THE DEMON IN THE BOTTLE
The demon in
the bottle, lights
up in the dark,
the night won’t let
my pain forget
the wounds that
left their mark,
a bottle for my troubles,
my tortured soul forlorn,
seductive for my lonesome,
my shipmate in a storm,
a bottle for my broken,
to comfort when dejected,
the demon’s charm will
twist my arm and
join my disconnected,
a bottle for my shaking,
a tempter when I’m weak,
the demon coax will drink
a toast in honor of
my losing streak,
a bottle by persuasion,
enticing for the snare,
a demon cup to
buck me up and
drown my deep despair,
the demon in
the bottle, lights
up in the dark,
the night won’t let
my pain forget
the wounds that
left their mark.
KICK THEM BACK
The bully boot,
the fully cruel,
the tyrant brute,
the ridicule,
they’ll smile and kick
you at their leisure –
kick them back or
they’ll kick you forever,
they’ll kick you around
from pillar to post,
they’ll kick and watch
your soul capsize,
they’ll slowly roast
until you’re toast,
they’ll persecute
and terrorize,
they’ll poke their fun,
they’ll smear your name,
they’ll beat you numb –
they”ll taunt and maim,
they’ll kick you and
your soft successor –
kick them back or
they’ll kick you forever.
YOU’VE ALREADY MADE IT
Don’t you strive for the fame
or pursue its fortune –
play a roulette game
like a business tycoon,
climb a high status ladder? –
don’t even start,
you’ve already made it,
you’ve got a good heart,
don’t boast your conquests –
your qualifications,
the talent contests –
the expectations,
don’t conquer the mountains
or top the charts –
you’ve already made it,
you’ve got a good heart,
don’t be frightened to lose,
or to take a rejection,
wear an ego bruise
for your imperfection,
your legacy is sleeping –
you’ve got a head start,
you’ve already made it,
you’ve got a good heart,
don’t stack on your power,
don’t you mass on appeal,
build the tallest tower
or sign a record deal,
bin your trophies –
certificates –
rip them apart,
you’ve already made it,
you’ve got a good heart.
