Well, of course I know
it’s politics,
it’s a game they play,
a game they play to win,
and we pretty much never
get to see what’s true
about them
and yet
there’s a little
ignited-in-the-sixties
flame in me
that won’t be quenched
even by
buckets of
righteous cynicism,
and, deep down,
I keep wishing
for someone genuine,
hoping
for the admirable,
longing
for a person
I’d choose as
my friend,
so when she laughs
with apparent delight,
dances
with what seems like
simple pleasure
in the moment,
I am stunned
that anyone wants
to call her awkward
because
to me
she is
so alive
and
absolutely
beautiful.
