I saw a video of Kiev Volunteers
who’d just been issued rifles for defense.
One told an interviewer, “I’ve never had a thing
to do with war, but now we must do this!”
Another said fluently in his native tongue,
“I must defend our homeland.”
They were marching down an urban street,
dressed in some kind of dark fatigues.
They passed a corner coffeehouse,
sporting a colorful artistic sign.
I wanted to stop and have a cup with them.
It could just as well have been my town,
They could as easily have been watching me.
